We are pleased to announce that contributions from our Cowboy Up fundraiser in March, along with sponsorships from One Mind (which provided the funding for the Traumatic Brain Injury Standard), the US Army, and the Golden Rule Foundation, allowed us to begin the capacity to develop a standard for Post-Traumatic Stress. A major gift from the Cohen Veteran’s Bioscience Foundation has now brought CDISC the majority of this the funding for this standard. The project kicked off 14 September 2016. We are grateful to all our sponsors, donors and volunteers that made this standard possible!

General Peter Chiarelli, USA (Ret.) served as the 32nd Vice Chief of Staff in the Army. Chiarelli was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Army and its 1.1 million active and reserve soldiers. Now, the CEO of One Mind for Research, Chiarelli continues his advocacy for eliminating the stigma associated with Service Members and Veterans seeking and receiving the assistance they need for the treatment of the invisible wounds of war: Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). One Mind for Research (currently a division of IMHRO) is an independent, non-profit organization bringing together health care providers, researchers, academics and the health care industry with the goal to rapidly develop better diagnostics, new treatments and cures for all illnesses and disorders of the brain.
Clay Johnston is the inaugural Dean of the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. His ambitious vision includes building a world-class medical school by creating a vital, inclusive health ecosystem that supports new and innovative models of education, healthcare delivery and discovery – all with a focus on improving health and making Austin a model healthy city. Clay is also a Neurologist, specializing in stroke care and research. He was formerly at the University of California, San Francisco where he served as Associate Vice Chancellor of Research and founding director of the Center for Healthcare Value. Clay is a graduate of Amherst College, completed medical school at Harvard University and received a PhD in epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley.
SFC Victor Medina, (Ret.), MRC, CRC, began active military service in 2002 and served with great distinction, completing two tours in Iraq and a tour in Afghanistan. But in June 2009, while serving his second tour in Iraq, Victor was injured when an explosive-formed projectile detonated next to his vehicle. He was medically evacuated and in the weeks following the blast, his cognitive abilities were slipping away; he also suffered from impaired vision, hearing, speech and motor skills and incessant migraine headaches. When asked about TBI, Victor speaks about the importance of increasing awareness about this growing threat to service members, veterans and civilians. In addition, he feels that TBI often goes unrecognized or untreated, which is why educating medical providers and the public is crucial for preventing and treating TBI.
Roxana Delgado, PhD, is the wife of SFC (Ret) Victor Medina. Since his injuries, the couple decided to reach beyond their own struggles and stand up for others, a mission that would eventually result in congressional recognition for their efforts to help improve the system of traumatic brain injury care. The couple identified gaps in TBI identification, diagnosis and treatment, which they brought to the attention of military and civilian leadership to help shape new military healthcare policies. Dr. Delgado is active in the military and veteran caregiver community and is an Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow representing the state of Texas. Dr. Delgado holds a PhD in Health Sciences and is a postdoctoral fellow at the Military Health Institute and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of Texas Health Sciences Center San Antonio.
