The following example shows the smoking status using the non-standard SUNCF variable to indicate if the subject is a current, former, or never smoker.  The start date and the end dates were added to some rows to reflect a scenario where these dates are available. These are not required variables; the fields would be null if the dates were not available. Similarly, Row 1 shows how to represent the dose and dose units (SUDOSE, SUDOSU), if available. The example shows different ways the substance name (SUTRT) may be collected. Note that all are categorized in the variable "SUCAT" as "SMOKING" to group the records more easily.

Item Number includes: Example 7-Smoking.

Row 1:Shows the subject is a 2-pack/day current smoker.
Row 2:Shows the subject was a tobacco smoker who quit in January of 2020. SUTRT = "SMOKING (INCLUDING NEW TYPES OF TOBACCO)" to indicate that the query into the subject's smoking history included questions about the use of new types of tobacco (such as heated tobacco and nicotine-free tobacco).
Row 3:Shows the subject never smoked tobacco (SUOCCUR = N); SUNCF = NEVER
Row 4:Shows the subject currently uses nicotine products in the form of vaping, which they started in 2019
